Rodrigues (French: île Rodrigues) is a 108-square-kilometre (42 sq mi) autonomous outer island of the Republic of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, about 560 kilometres (350 mi) east of Mauritius.[1] It is part of the Mascarene Islands which include Mauritius and Réunion. It is of volcanic origin surrounded by coral reef, and just off its coast lie some tiny uninhabited islands. The island used to be the tenth District of Mauritius; it gained autonomous status on 10 December 2002, and it is governed by the Rodrigues Regional Assembly. The capital of the island is Port Mathurin.
Its inhabitants are Mauritian citizens. As of 2014, the island’s population was about 41,669, according to Statistics Mauritius. Most of the inhabitants are of mixed African and French descent. Its economy is based mainly on fishing, farming, handicraft and a developing tourism sector.
At the heart of the Indian Ocean, 650 km to the north-east of Mauritius, Rodrigues Island is the part of Africa that is closest to Australia.

Rodrigues offers great spots for kite surfing, such as Moroak, Gravies, Plainer coral, and Ile aux Cocos.
The safety of participants is assured by various local teams whose aim is to assist kite surfers in case of difficulty at sea.

Coral Quarry
The southside of Rodrigues island has a huge density of coral to the point where at one point the used to dig it up and use it to make blocks for houses. Today it is protected by the government and so only a couple people make little sculptures out of the coral.

Big Game Fishing Rodrigues
Rodrigues is a mostly valuable destination for the sport fishing it proposes since the sea there is known to be fishmonger.
The most captured fishes in the Rodriguan waters are namely the Blue and Black Marlin, the ‘Espadon’, the ‘Dorado’, the yellow tuna fish and the ‘Dogtooth Tuna’, the Carrangue bleu’ and the ‘ignobilis’.

Trout D’argent
Trout D’argent is a reputed beach found in the eastern part of Rodrigues. It is accessible only by foot and ideally visiting it forms part of a trekking excursion.
Mount Limon
It is located near the center of the island
It is an easy climb and the road that goes by the mountain goes really close to the summit. It offers a good view of the surrounding area.
Local Market
The Saturday market is as busy as Rodrigues gets and it’s the best place on the island to shop for fresh produce and souvenirs. It’s open the rest of the week but really gears up on Saturday, when much of the island turns out.
It’s next to the bridge near the post office. Turn up later than 10am and you’ll wonder what all the fuss is about.
